Storm-Proof Your Home: Hurricane Preparedness 101
These four tips will help ensure you safeguard your home and family.
It's that time of year again when we need to start making preparations for hurricane season. Let's discuss how you can be better prepared when a storm approaches.
1. Pick up some extra supplies when you're out shopping. Buy supplies such as an additional case of water, canned soup, or pet food. The key is to have enough on hand so that you won't be stressed if you need to venture out during a storm.
2. Ensure your policy is up to date. I like to mark the beginning of every hurricane season on my calendar as a reminder to contact my insurance company or agent to ensure my policy is up-to-date and active. Also, know if your flood insurance is still valid. Make sure to address any lapses in coverage before a storm hits. Discovering insurance issues after a storm is the worst time to do so.

3. Familiarize yourself with the evacuation routes in your area. Many people are new to coastal regions and might not know where to go during a mandatory evacuation order. Knowing your route in advance can save you valuable time and stress when you need to leave quickly.
4. Prepare your most important documents and items. Ready your valuables like birth certificates and family photos. Keep these items accessible and packed in a bag so that if you have to leave abruptly, you can grab them along with other essentials without any last-minute stress.
