5 Steps to Stay Safe During Hurricane Season in NC

Follow these five tips to stay safe during hurricane season.

Hurricane season is here, and you need to be prepared. If you just moved to North Carolina, hurricane season can be scary, but you shouldn’t have anything to worry about if you take the right steps. That’s why today, I’ll share five tips to ensure your safety and protect your property:

1. Stock up on supplies. Gather essentials like batteries and flashlights, non-perishable food, bottled water, and pet supplies (if you have one). Aim to have enough supplies to last several days without needing to go for an emergency grocery run.

2. Eliminate outdoor hazards. Trim overgrown vegetation and dead tree limbs around your house. Remove loose debris and secure outdoor furniture to prevent them from becoming hazards during the storm.

3. Prepare your home. Clear out drains and gutters to prevent flooding. If you have a bathtub, consider filling it with clean water in case of emergency.

4. Organize general safety items. Do your laundry ahead of time, so you don’t run out of clean clothes and extra bedding. Assembling a first-aid kit and replenishing needed medicine is a must. Also, have a working radio with you to keep up with the news. Lastly, know your evacuation route and have your important documents readily accessible.

5. Entertainment for kids. It’s a good idea to have some board games and cards to keep you and your children entertained during power outages.
